In short, the antenna must "see" the source of the signal, be it an aircraft for ADS-B, an Inmarsat satellite for Outernet, or weather satellites.
It's easier to visualize the concept, that's what you see:

Just like you, the antenna can not see behind a house, and trees will also weaken the signal. This matters little with strong ADS-B signals, and can matter a lot with space-based signals.
